With a dozen red roses and a bottle of wine in hand, Rhett headed for Corey’s front door. He hadn’t called ahead. Likely, he should have, but he wanted to surprise Corey. Rhett doubted anyone ever did anything nice for him. He wanted to be the one who gave Corey all the good memories. Before he had time to ring the doorbell, the door opened, and a familiar figure stepped out. Rhett only knew the guy’s name because he had married a friend of Rhett’s from Leather Bait. Still, it was a bit off-putting to suddenly run into Bear at Corey’s.

A bright smile exploded across Bear’s face when they nearly collided. “Hey. It’s Rhett, right?”

Rhett nodded. “Bear, right?”

Bear nodded as he eyed the gifts Rhett had brought for Corey. “I heard you were dating Dr. A. That’s awesome. He needs someone to keep him on his toes.”

Rhett’s usual bright smile snapped into place. “That’s me. I can do that.”

A chuckle rumbled from Bear, as if Rhett amused him. “He’s in the exam room.” Bear stepped aside to let Rhett in as he made the claim.

Rhett stepped inside. “I thought Creed and you moved to Washington or something like that. Are you a patient of Corey’s?”

Bear nodded. “Yep. Dr. A. is the best. Creed and I are in town, visiting family. I thought I’d get my yearly checkup while I was here.”

Rhett pulled a face. “Yikes. Don’t remind me. I need to do that too, but I’m always putting it off.”

“Well, you’re dating a doctor, so…”

Rhett brightened. “Hey, you’re right. I never have to go to the doctor again.”

Bear laughed. “It was good seeing you.”

“You too. Tell Creed I said hi.”

“Will do,” Bear said as he pulled the door closed behind him. Rhett immediately focused on finding his man. He headed down the hallway, following the path he had taken the last time he had been there. When Rhett stepped inside the exam room, he found Corey on a rolling stool with his head resting on his crossed arms on the exam table. Rhett’s heart dropped at the sight. He looked so tired.

“Are you okay, baby?”

Corey visibly startled and turned toward the door. “Hey. I didn’t hear the doorbell.”

Rhett moved deeper into the room. “Bear let me in on his way out. Did I come at a bad time?”

“No such thing. I’m happy to see you.”

It felt good to hear that. Corey wasn’t one to say how he felt. Rhett shook the flowers and wine in Corey’s direction. “I stopped by the store and grabbed these as a pick-me-up, and I thought you might like to share them with me.”

Corey looked confused.

Rhett laughed. “I’m joking. They’re for you.”

A sweet smile touched Corey’s lips as Rhett passed him the flowers. “Thank you. I’ll admit I’ve always thought of flowers as a ridiculous gift since they die, but I’m strangely moved.”

Rhett snorted. “I think I might’ve been disappointed by any other reaction,” Rhett said, sounding as if the words had been more for himself than Corey.
